Kimberly's Story

Kimberly

Major: Psychology
Hometown: Cypress, Texas

Why did you choose ASU?
Kimberly received many scholarship offers to schools all around the United States as a National Hispanic Scholar. But ASU came out on top because of the opportunities and experiences that would be available to her through Barrett, The Honors College. "Not only was the campus beautiful and in such a great location, but Barrett would allow me to get the best of both worlds — a small college feel at a large university. It was clear that I would not just be an ASU student, I would be Kimberly.

What is the most important financial aid advice you have to offer families?
"Don't be scared! Applying for financial aid for the first time can be a bit confusing, but don't be afraid to seek help from others. The financial aid process is typically only as difficult as you make it. The most important thing is to become familiar with the financial aid website and policies so that no surprises come your way. Then, check MyASU and email DAILY. Never assume that everything is 'fine.' Various things can alter your award package or hold up the disbursement of your funds, and the best way to avoid any obstacles is to stay on top of your holds and to-do's."

"Also, when choosing which school to attend, make sure you are financially prepared. It's also important to visit the school and get to know the staff and the area to get a feel for what it will be like to be a student there. Even if you have your heart set on a particular school, shop around!"
