Timeline for Health Professional School Preparation

Applying to medical school is a long process. The Health Professions Advising Office is here to support ASU students and alumni through that process. The following timeline outlines the major steps involved in applying to medical school through the Health Professions Advising Office.

College Year One

Fall Semester

  1. Meet with a pre-health advisor and learn about the pre-health advisory program.
  2. As applicable, ensure that pre-health advisor receives course directors’ evaluations.
  3. Successfully complete first-semester required premedical course work and other degree requirements.

Spring Semester

  1. Explore the Association of American Medical College's (AAMC) considering a career in medicine.
  2. Identify summer paid/volunteer medical-related opportunities.
  3. Successfully complete second-semester required premedical coursework and other degree requirements.

Summer

  1. Complete summer paid/volunteer medical-related experience.
  2. Attend summer school, if necessary.

College Year Two

Fall Semester

  1. Check-in with pre-health advisor and participate in pre-health activities.
  2. Investigate available volunteer/paid medical-related clinical or research activities.
  3. Successfully complete first-semester required premedical course work and other degree requirements.

Spring Semester

  1. Check-in with pre-health advisor and participate in pre-health activities.
  2. Participate in paid/volunteer medical-related clinical or research activities.
  3. Identify summer paid/volunteer medical-related opportunities.
  4. Successfully complete second-semester required pre-medical course work and other degree requirements.

Summer

  1. Complete summer paid or volunteer medical-related experience.
  2. Participate in a summer health careers program, if available.
  3. Attend summer school, if necessary.

College Year Three

Fall Semester

  1. Check-in with pre-health advisor and participate in pre-health activities.
  2. Continue participation in paid/volunteer medical-related activities.
  3. Investigate:
    • Applying to medical school.
    • medical schools in the U.S. and Canada.
    • Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
    • AAMC Fee Assistance Program.
    • visit the AAMC Minorities in Medicine website for information about groups underrepresented in medicine.
  4. Begin preparation and register for desired MCAT administration; visit MCAT Web site for available test dates.
  5. Successfully complete first-semester required premedical course work and other degree requirements.

Spring Semester

  1. Consult regularly with pre-health advisor regarding:
    • Schedule for completion of school-specific requirements for advisor/committee premedical evaluation,
    • Advice about medical education options.
    • Continue participation in paid/volunteer medical-related activities.
    • Prepare for and take desired MCAT administration; visit the MCAT website.
    • Take spring MCAT.
  2. Investigate information about medical school application services:
  3. Investigate, as applicable, the AAMC Curriculum Directory for information about medical school curricula and joint, dual and combined-degree programs.
  4. Successfully complete second-semester required premedical course work and other degree requirements.
  5. Ensure that pre-health advisor receives course directors' evaluations.

Summer

  1. Participate in a summer health careers program, if available.
  2. Complete AMCAS application.
  3. Take desired MCAT administration.
  4. Attend summer school, if necessary.
  5. Become familiar with:
    • Recommendations concerning medical school acceptance procedures for first-year entering students.
    • Applicant responsibilities.

College Year Four

Fall Semester

  1. Complete supplementary application materials for schools to which you have applied.
  2. Consult regularly with pre-health advisor regarding:
    • Completion of school-specific requirements for advisor/committee premedical evaluation.
    • status of application/admission process for schools to which you have applied.
  3. Continue participation in paid/volunteer medical-related activities.
  4. Interview at medical schools.
  5. Investigate:
    • (MD)2: Monetary Decisions for Medical Doctors online program.
    • Financial aid forms required by medical schools searchable database.
  6. Successfully complete first-semester elective science and non-science course work and other degree requirements.
  7. Ensure that pre-health advisor receives course directors' evaluations.

Spring Semester

  1. Make interim and final decisions about medical school choice.
  2. Notify medical schools that you will not be attending.
  3. Ensure that all IRS forms are submitted.
  4. Successfully complete second-semester elective science and non-science course work and other degree requirements.
  5. Graduate.

Summer

  1. Prepare for medical school enrollment: purchase books and equipment and make appropriate living arrangements.
  2. Attend orientation programs and matriculate into medical school.
