Your next steps for fall 2018

Upon admission for fall 2018, new international students need to complete the following items: 

Before you arrive at ASU

Immigration: SEVIS and Student Visa

International students who wish to pursue their studies at Arizona State University must obtain F-1 or J-1 visas. Click here to learn more about the SEVIS and student visa steps.

ASU ID and Email Accounts

After you applied to ASU, you were issued an ASURITE UserID. This ID gives you access to ASU's online student services at My ASU. You must activate your ASURITE UserID online. While activating your ASURITE UserID, set up your ASU (@asu.edu) email account. This email is the official address to which the university sends email communications and is recorded in ASU's electronic directories. If you do not have an ASURITE UserID and activation code, call 480-965-2437. If you need help with the activation process, contact the University Technology Office (UTO) Help Desk at 1-855-278-5080. Housing and Dining

ASU offers on-campus housing and dining options at all campus locations. As a student living on campus, you will have convenient access to the opportunities, resources, and programs offered at ASU, both academic and professional. To apply to live on campus, please access the My Housing Portal to choose your housing preference. If you intend to live elsewhere, please notify the university by choosing that option on your New Student checklist in My ASU. If you are not planning to live on-campus and need assistance with your housing transition, please contact Off Campus Housing.

If you are living on campus for the academic year and plan to participate in the Academic Foundations Program or another Early Arrival experience through your academic college, you are eligible to move in early by requesting an Early Arrival on the My Housing Portal. If you have questions regarding the Early Arrival process, please contact University Housing at housing@asu.edu.

If you need short-term, temporary housing when you arrive at ASU until your off-campus housing accommodation is available, or if you need a place to stay for a few days while you seek off-campus housing, ASU University Housing has a limited number of spaces available, which are distributed to students on a first-come-first-serve basis. This short-term, temporary housing option is only available through mid-August 2018. ASU offers several meal plans options for students living on and off campus. Review meal plan options.

MMR Immunization

You must submit your measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) immunization form before you can register for classes. The form is included in your admission packet. Visit the ASU Health Services website for more information.

If you are under 18 years-old, please plan to bring a signed consent form for medical treatment with you to the U.S.

Math Placement Test

Take the Math Placement Test online. New students enrolling in math classes are required to take the Math Placement Test unless they have transferred equivalent courses to ASU. Take the test as early as possible. Students who are required to take the test will see the item Take Math Placement Test under Priority Tasks in My ASU.

Transfer Credit

If you are a transfer student bringing college credit with you, International Admission Services initially awards transfer credit and then your academic advisor in your major will determine how the credit applies to your degree. Call International Admission Services at 480-965-2437 or email asuinternational@asu.edu if you have any questions.

Schedule Academic Advising and Register for Classes

Contact your academic advisor to schedule an advising session and register for classes. In My ASU, click on Academic Advising in the box labeled Academic Support Team.

Transfer students in Fulton Schools of Engineering and W. P. Carey School of Business will receive additional information by email from their college about the next steps to take in order to receive advising and register for classes.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition charges will be billed to your student account and may be viewed online through My ASU. By registering for classes, you agree to pay all applicable tuition and registration fees. If you decide not to attend, you must completely withdraw from all classes before the semester begins.

If tuition is not paid by the applicable due date, you will automatically be enrolled in the tuition installment plan and charged a nonrefundable enrollment fee. Visit the Tuition and Billing website for more information.

You can access online billing through My ASU. Click on My Finances then Make a Payment. You are responsible for reviewing their ASU email account for notification of billing statements and reviewing your student account on My ASU for current information. Billing statements are not mailed to your home.

Review the Getting Started at ASU guide

Getting Started at ASU is a digital pre-orientation experience featuring informational slides, videos and quizzes to help you get familiar with ASU and the campus resources we offer to help you succeed. As a new international student, you are expected to complete the digital pre-orientation before you arrive on campus. Once you arrive at ASU, you will attend an in-person orientation for undergraduate students, as well as a number of events intended to assist with your transition to your ASU campus. You can access Getting Started at ASU under your Priority Tasks on My ASU. You will need your ASURITE ID to log in to My ASU and to access the guide.
 

Travel Arrangements and Arrival

  • Aug. 16, 2018, is the first day of fall semester classes. It is also the last day you are permitted to arrive and check-in. If you are not able to arrive by Aug. 16 due to visa delays, you must contact Admission Services at asuinternational@asu.edu. They will provide you with further instructions.
  • Do not attempt to enter the U.S. after the school start date indicated in your I-20 or DS-2019, as you will be denied entry.
  • See the academic calendar for important dates for the fall semester.
  • You may not enter the U.S. more than 30 days before the start date listed on your SEVIS I-20 form or DS-2019.
  • ASU will provide you with FREE shuttle transportation from the airport to your housing location. More information about this service will be provided in July 2016.

 

When you arrive at ASU

SEVIS Check-in

SEVIS check-in is a mandatory process as per U.S. Immigration policies. In order to stay in compliance, all international students are required to report to the International Students and Scholars Center, including:

  • students who are entering the U.S. for the first time on an ASU I-20 or DS-2019
  • students who have been in the U.S. on an I-20 or DS-2019 from another school and are transferring to ASU
  • students who have attended ASU's Global Launch English Program (formerly known as AECP)

After you arrive in the U.S., you can use your smartphone or computer to complete the SEVIS check-in. Follow these three simple steps to report your arrival before the start date listed on your I-20 or DS-2019:

  1. Upload copies of your immigration documents by logging in to My ASU and clicking on Complete SEVIS Check-in under your Priority Tasks.
  2. Update your local address and SEVIS address in My ASU.
    • Local address must be a residential address in the U.S. and must contain street number, street name, city, state and postal code.
    • SEVIS address must be a residential address in your home country.
    • P.O. Boxes, company addresses or school addresses are not valid addresses.
  3. Learn about how to maintain your visa status at students.asu.edu/international/support/maintainf1status.

During the Academic Foundations Program, you will be guided through the process of SEVIS registration, and you will receive important information about F-1/J-1 immigration compliance, enrollment and other essential matters to facilitate a smooth transition to the university and to successfully begin your ASU experience.

Orientation Week for International Students

 We have planned two important events for you during the International Orientation Week.

International Orientation

All new international students must attend the International Student Orientation at the Tempe campus. This event will help you become acquainted with university resources, meet other international students at ASU and learn how to get involved on campus.

Academic Foundations Program

In addition to the International Orientation, all new international students must attend the Academic Foundations Program on at the Tempe campus. The event will help you build the necessary skills for academic excellence and will help you adjust to your new life at ASU.

Identification (ID) cards

Students have the option to obtain the Sun Card or the Pitchfork Card when they arrive at ASU. The Sun Card is an official ASU student photo ID that allows you to complete in-person transactions and gain access to library and other services. The Pitchfork Card is two cards in one — it is an ASU student ID card and a MasterCard® check card.

Get your Sun Card or Pitchfork Card as soon as you arrive at ASU. It is also highly recommended that you obtain an Arizona state ID card. Or, if you want to drive in the U.S., you need to get an Arizona driver license (instead of an Arizona state ID card).
