Welcome to the Freshman Challenge: The Well Devils Project
About the Well Devils Project
Arizona State University is launching a series of studies and interventions to create a more healthy campus— a collaboration of students and the university to make ASU a place where health comes first. Mayo Clinic is co-sponsoring this initiative, and we are pleased to be partnering with an organization whose focus on healthy living aligns with our efforts.
All freshmen 18 years and older are invited to participate. In the initial stage of this study, our goal is to collect summary measures on weight status for the entire freshman class. At a time that is convenient to you, you can visit a Well Devils Zone, located in a residence hall. You will simply step onto a scale to measure your weight and then you will measure your height.
Swiping your Sun Card or Pitchfork Card at one of the Well Devils Zone monitoring stations and stepping on the scale constitutes your agreement to participate in the study. Your total involvement should take less than one minute. No one, including you, will know your weight.
Your weight and height information and your 10-digit ID number is all that will be recorded. No one at ASU will be able to identify the measures you give as belonging to you, unless you later allow them to do so. At a later time, you may be contacted and asked if you wish to participate in future studies with your freshman peers, receive information about wellness activities, or be entered into prize drawings.
Your participation in this study is voluntary. You are encouraged to ask questions. If you choose not to participate or to withdraw from the study at any time, there is no penalty. The results of the research study may be published, but your name and other uniquely identifying information will never be published or associated with your results. That is, your name will not be known, published or associated with your measures in any way.
There are no foreseeable risks for your participation in the research. There may be no direct benefit to you from participating in the research. A possible benefit of your participation may exist for others, however, if it results in better campus health.
If you have any questions concerning the research study, please call us at 480-727-9879 or email us at email@example.com. If you have any questions about your rights as a subject/participant in this research, or if you feel you have been placed at risk, you can contact the chair of the Human Subjects Institutional Review Board, through ASU's Office of Research Integrity and Assurance, at 480-965-6788.
