Financial Aid and Scholarship Services will require completion of your parent federal tax verification only if it is needed to complete your financial aid file. This item holds the awarding and disbursement of financial aid if it is listed on your task list on My ASU.
You can view your document status on your My ASU Finances page. Please allow 2-3 business days to show receipt of your parent IRS Tax Return Transcript in your My ASU Financing Tasks.

ASU has partnered with Valley of the Sun United Way to provide free tax filing services to ASU students and families through myfreetaxes.com.
Important: starting with the 2012-2013 academic year and moving forward, ASU will not accept copies of tax returns. Any tax returns received by ASU will not be processed and will be shredded, which will delay your aid file from being completed. Please follow our new process below for verifying tax information.
If your parents are required to file a Federal Income Tax Return (IRS Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ), there are two options to choose from in order to complete your parent federal tax verification:
Option #1: Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool
Return to www.fafsa.gov to make corrections to your FAFSA. You will need to update question #80 and change your answer to "Already Completed". Once question #80 shows an answer of "Already Completed" a box will become available for you to click on that says "Link to IRS".
Your parent should click on the link, which will prompt him/her to report which parent they are, by using the Federal Student Aid PIN for that parent of record. They will be re-directed to an IRS web site that will be pre-populated with personal identifying information for them to review. This information must match the identifying information that was used to file their federal tax return. When your parent has verified that the identifying information is the same as the identifying information that was used on their federal tax return, they will click on the "Submit" button.
Federal IRS tax information will be displayed for you and your parent to review. Check the box that says, "Transfer My Tax Information into the FAFSA" and then click on the "Transfer Now" button. Your parent's federal tax information will be transferred into your FAFSA.
Complete the FAFSA corrections by signing with your PIN. You will know that the process was successful because your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) will now be displayed on your FAFSA on the web. By completing the IRS data retrieval and not changing any of the data that was retrieved from the IRS, your Retrieve Parent IRS Data task list item on your MyASU will be completed.
For some families the IRS Data Retrieval Tool is not available. If you are unable to complete the IRS data retrieval process, you may take advantage of the second option to complete the Retrieve Parent IRS Data task list item:
Option #2: Obtain an IRS Tax Return Transcript
If you are unable to use option 1 above, please submit a copy of your IRS Tax Return Transcript to Financial Aid and Scholarship Services. When requesting a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS you may choose from the following methods:
- Order a transcript online. Download and print immediately, or request delivery by mail.
- Call 800-908-9946.
What tax year's tax return transcript should I submit?
- For the 2013-2014 academic year, submit a 2012 tax return transcript.
- For the 2014-2015 academic year, submit a 2013 tax return transcript.
If your parents did not file and were not required to file a federal tax return, your parents will need to complete one of the following two options:
Return to your FAFSA on the web and make a correction to FAFSA question #79 to reflect "My Parents are not going to file."
Complete and submit a signed copy of the Parent Non-Tax Filing form, located at the bottom of this page, to Financial Aid and Scholarship Services.
- Do not submit any copies of tax returns or Tax Account Transcripts. Only the use of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool or Tax Return Transcripts will be accepted as documentation.
- ASU cannot accept documentation via e-mail. Please submit documentation in-person, by mail or by fax.
- Please do not submit tax extension documentation as ASU does not award aid based on tax extension data.
- Print your name and ASU ID on the upper right hand corner of all documents submitted.
If you have any portions of IRA distributions, pensions or annuities that were rolled over, you can submit the Tax Rollover Verification form. Rollover amounts may be excluded from the untaxed income section of the FAFSA.
If you have already completed the IRS Data Retrieval on your FAFSA and then made corrections to any of the items, you will need to go back to your FAFSA and re-import your IRS information without making any changes to the information. If you are unable to do this, you can submit a Tax Return Transcript to Financial Aid and Scholarship Services.
