Fixing errors on your 2022-2023 FAFSA

Thank you for submitting your Free Application for Federal Student Aid. We need you to make corrections to your FAFSA or give us more information to support what you reported. Check the instructions below to see what steps you need to take. When Financial Aid and Scholarship Services receives your updated FAFSA, we will begin processing your federal student aid file.

Instructions to correct errors on your FAFSA
What happened How you can correct it
The Federal Processor is unable to process your Free Application for Federal Student Aid because of issues related to the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988.

Parent 1's Social Security number on your FAFSA could not be confirmed with the Social Security Administration.

Confirm your parent's Social Security number

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the “Parent Demographics” section to verify the information is correct on your FAFSA. . 

If the Social Security number for Parent 1 is listed correctly, then re enter their Social Security number or confirm that Parent 1 does not have a Social Security number by reentering all zeros. 

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.  

Once Arizona State University’s Financial Aid and Scholarship Services receives your updated information from FAFSA, we will begin processing your federal student aid file.

Your Parent 2's Social Security number as reported on your FAFSA could not be confirmed with the Social Security Administration.

Confirm your parent's Social Security number

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the “Parent Demographics” section to verify the information is correct on your FAFSA. . 

If the Social Security number for Parent 2 is listed correctly, then re enter their Social Security number or confirm that Parent 2 does not have a Social Security number by reentering all zeros. 

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.  

Once Arizona State University’s Financial Aid and Scholarship Services receives your updated information from FAFSA, we will begin processing your federal student aid file. 

You either did not provide a date of birth or the date of birth you provided on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid did not match the Social Security Administration's records.

Confirm your date of birth

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and using your FSA ID and visit the “Student Demographics” section to verify that the information is correct. If your date of birth is correct, confirm this information by reentering the same value for your date of birth. If your date of birth is incorrect, enter the correct date.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

Parent 1's name and Social Security number, as reported on your FAFSA, could not be confirmed with the Social Security Administration's records.

Confirm your parent's name and Social Security number

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and and visit the “Parent Demographics” section to verify that the information is correct on your FAFSA. 

If both Parent 1's name and SSN are listed correctly on your FAFSA, confirm his name by re-entering both his last name and first name initial. Next, Parent 1 should contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or socialsecurity.gov to make sure they correct it in their records.

If either Parent 1's SSN or name is listed incorrectly on your FAFSA, enter the correct information. 

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the Social Security number, name and date of birth, as reported on your FAFSA, for Parent 1 or Parent 2 are not valid.

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the “Parent Demographics” section to verify that the information is correct on your FAFSA.

If Parent 1's and/or Parent 2's SSN, name and date of birth are listed correctly, confirm that the SSN, name and/or date of birth match exactly with the Social Security Administration's records for at least one parent.  

If a parent does not have a SSN, enter all zeros.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

Your Parent 2's name and Social Security number, as reported on your FAFSA, could not be confirmed with the Social Security Administration.

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the “Parent Demographics” section to verify that the information is correct on your FAFSA. 

If both the name and SSN for Parent 2 are listed correctly, confirm their name by re-entering both the last name and first name initial. Next, your parent should contact the SSA at at 1-800-772-1213 or socialsecurity.gov to make sure they correct it in their records.

If either your Parent 2's SSN or name is listed incorrectly on your FAFSA, enter the correct information.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the date of birth you provided on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid may be incorrect.

Confirm your date of birth

Log into fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the “Student Demographics” section to update your date of birth. 

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required signature.

Log into fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the “Student Demographics” section to update your date of birth.. 

If your date of birth is correct, confirm this information by reentering the same value for your date of birth.

If your date of birth is incorrect, enter the correct date.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required signature.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the name you submitted on your Free Application for Student Aid was incomplete.

Provide your full name

Review the name listed on your Student Aid Report, then log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and and visit the “Student Demographics” section to provide your full first and last name on your FAFSA. 

If your first name and last name are correct, then you must confirm this information by re-entering the same value for your first and/or last name.   

If your first name and/or last name are incorrect, then you must correct your first and/or last name.

NOTE: A blank first or last name is valid only if you have only one name.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required signature.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, you did not report a name on your Free Application for Student Aid.

Provide your full name

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and provide your full first and last name on your FAFSA.

A blank first or last name is valid only if you have only one name. If you have only one name, then re-confirm your name (first or last) by re-entering the same value and leave the first or last name blank if you do not have one. 

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, your parent(s) did file or will file a 2020 income tax return but also reported that Parent 1 does not have a Social Security number.

Update your parent's Social Security Information

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the “Parent Demographics” section to verify the information is correct on your FAFSA.  

If Parent 1's Social Security numberis correct, reenter their Social Security number or confirm that Parent 1 does not have a Social Security number by reentering all zeros.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, your parent(s) did file or will file a 2020 income tax return but also reported that Parent 2 does not have a Social Security number.

Update your parent's Social Security information

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the “Parent Demographics” section to verify the information is correct on your FAFSA. 

If Parent 2's Social Security number is correct, reenter their Social Security number or confirm that Parent 2 does not have a Social Security number by reentering all zeros. 

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, you listed your parents' marital status as unmarried but reported two parental incomes.

Update your parents' marital status

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the "Parent Demographics" section to review your parents’ marital status and verify the information is correct on your FAFSA.

If your parents' marital status is unmarried and NOT living together, then you will need to correct your FAFSA by removing one of your parents’ incomes. 

If your parents' marital status is unmarried and living together, correct your parent's marital status on the FAFSA. 

If your custodial parent is married, correct your custodial parent's marital status on the FAFSA to married or remarried, and provide both your custodial and step-parent's information.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

Arizona State University’s Financial Aid and Scholarship Services may request additional documentation to verify your parents' marital status as of the date you signed and submitted your FAFSA.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, your marital status as reported on your FAFSA conflicts with the number of incomes that you reported.

Update your marital status

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the "Student Demographics" section to review your marital status and verify that the information is correct on your FAFSA.

You should only report income for a spouse if you were married and not separated as of the date you signed and submitted your FAFSA. If you were separated or divorced as of the date you signed your FAFSA, you only need to report your income, even if a joint tax return was filed. 

If your marital status is correctly reported as unmarried, remove the spouse's income from work from your FAFSA. 

If your marital status is incorrectly reported as unmarried, then correct your marital status to married/remarried on the FAFSA. 

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required signature. 

FASS may request additional documentation to verify your marital status as of the date you signed and submitted your FAFSA. 

The name and Social Security number you entered for Parent 2 on your FAFSA did not match the Social Security Administration's records.

Confirm your parent's name and Social Security number

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the "Parent Demographics" section to verify that the information is correct on your FAFSA.

If both the name and SSN for Parent 2 are listed correctly, confirm their name by re-entering both the last name and first name initial. Next, your parent should contact the SSA to make sure they correct it in their records by contacting them at 1-800-772-1213 or socialsecurity.gov.

If either the SSN or name for Parent 2 is listed incorrectly on your FAFSA, enter the correct information.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

You did not provide your parents’ income information on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the "Parent Financials" section to add parents' taxed and untaxed income.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the appropriate required signature.

You did not provide your income information on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Log in to your FAFSA using your FSA ID and visit the "Student Financials" section to provide your taxed and untaxed income.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the appropriate required signature.

Your parent did not sign your FAFSA or the Student Aid Report corrections you submitted.

Update signature

Complete one of the following tasks:

  1. Make your corrections electronically via the FAFSA website.
    • Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID.
    • Visit the "Sign and Submit" section. Click Provide Signatures. Your parent will enter their FSA ID and click Sign.
    • Submit your parent’s signature.
  2. Make a signature correction on your printed SAR certification page and resubmit it by mailing it to Federal Student Aid Programs, P.O. Box 7650, London, KY 40742-7650.

If your parent is not able to sign, contact Financial Aid and Scholarship Services at Arizona State University.

Your parent(s) did file or will file a 2020 income tax return, but also reported that Parent 1 does not have a Social Security number.

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the "Paretn Demographics" section to verify the information is correct on your FAFSA.

If the Social Security number for Parent 1 is listed correctly, then reenter their Social Security number or confirm that Parent 1 does not have a Social Security number by reentering all zeros.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

You did not provide your parents’ marital status and the number of family members in your home on your FAFSA..

Update your parent'(s) marital status and/or the number of people in your household.

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID, and visit the "Parent Demographics" section to review your parents’ marital status and the number of family members in your home, and provide the missing information.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

You did not provide your marital status and the number of family members in your home on your FAFSA.

Update your marital status and the number of people in your household.

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID. Next, visit the "Student Demographics" section to review your marital status and the number of family members in your home, and provide the missing information.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required signatures.

The National Student Loan Data System has reported that you have one or more student loans that may have been obtained fraudulently. At this time, you are not eligible to receive any federal student aid until this issue has been resolved.

Contact the Department of Education to confirm your eligibility for aid.

Contact Federal Student Aid at 202-377-4074 within 30 days of the date that you received your letter of notification. 

The date of birth you entered for Parent 1 on your FAFSA did not match the date of birth in the Social Security Administration's records based on the Social Security number that you submitted.

If either the SSN or date of birth for Parent 1 is listed incorrectly on your FAFSA, enter the correct information. 

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

The date of birth you entered for Parent 2 on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid did not match the date of birth in the Social Security Administration's records based on the Social Security number that you submitted.

Confirm your parent's date of birth.

Log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the "Parent Demographics" section to verify that the information is correct on your FAFSA. 

If both the SSN and date of birth for Parent 2 are listed correctly, confirm their date of birth by re-entering it. Next, your parent should contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or socialsecurity.gov to make sure they correct it in their records.

If either the SSN or date of birth for Parent 2 is listed incorrectly on your FAFSA, enter the correct information. 

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

If either the SSN or name for Parent 2 is listed incorrectly on your FAFSA, enter the correct information. 

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

The Social Security Number, name and date of birth, as reported on your FAFSA for Parent 1 or Parent 2 are not valid.

To resolve this issue, you will need to log in to fafsa.gov using your FSA ID and visit the "Parent Demographics" sectionverify that the information is correct on your FAFSA.

If the SSN, name and date of birth for Parent 1 and/or Parent 2 are listed correctly, confirm that the SSN, name and/or date of birth match exactly with the Social Security Administration's records for at least one parent. 

If your parent does not have a SSN, enter all zeros.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.

Your parent(s) did file or will file a 2020 income tax return, but also reported that Parent 1 does not have a Social Security number.

Then submit your FAFSA correction with the required student and parent signatures.
