ASU Earn to Learn Frequently Asked Questions

Are transfer students eligible for this program?

Students that transfer to ASU from an Arizona community college are eligible to apply for the program.

Is the scholarship-match renewable?

The matching scholarship is renewable for up to four years through the Earn to Learn program, depending on on-going funding as long students remain eligible and continue to save $500 each year.

What does the funding cover at ASU?

Earn to Learn funding may be used to cover the costs of tuition, mandatory fees and books only.

Will I have to repay the matched funds?

The scholarship (matched funds portion) is a form of gift aid that recipients are not expected to pay back.

How are the funds distributed?

All funds, including the student’s IDA savings and the scholarship match, will be split between the fall and spring semesters.

If I’m DACA eligible, can I qualify for the ASU Earn to Learn scholarship?

No. Eligibility for Earn to Learn is based on Arizona residency and U.S. citizenship; in order to qualify, you must: 1) Be an Arizona resident and have lived here for 3 months prior to applying, 2) Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, 3) Have a social security or federal tax identification number.

What happens to the $500 if I do not come to ASU?

You earned it, so you get to keep it.

How do I know if I’m eligible?

After residency and citizenship, the Earn to Learn scholarship is based on household income. Current Federal regulations require that eligible applicant household earn less earn less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level or qualify for the Earn Income Tax Credit. Details for eligibility can be found on the Pre-Application.

What grade levels can apply?

The scholarship is open to students currently in grades 9-12, Community College students transferring to ASU, and Arizona State University students, who are members of the SPARKS student organization, are also eligible to apply.

Can I use ASU Earn to Learn scholarship funds for ASU courses through the Collegiate Scholars Academy or Global Freshman Academy?

If you are a current saver, the scholarship may be used for the Collegiate Scholars Academy Summer program and select courses throughout the academic year. If you are a new saver, the scholarship can be applied one year after enrollment. ASU Earn to Learn funds cannot be applied to Global Freshman Academy course fees or tution. Can I deposit the $500 all at once?

No. The program is designed to build financial literacy and savings habits. Over the course of a 6-month period, you may deposit a minimum of $25/month, and a maximum of $84/month.

What documents will I need to complete my application?

What if I do not save the full $500?

ASU is committed to helping students reach their educational goals and achieve success. If an eligible student is unable to save the full $500, scaled funding is still available, and can be used in conjunction with other financial aid awards.

Is there a GPA requirement?
