Financial Aid
Satisfactory Academic Progress
In order to ensure students receiving financial aid are successfully completing their degree program in a timely fashion, the federal government requires each institution to monitor each student's academic progress. To remain eligible for federal and state aid programs, you must meet all three of ASU's SAP standards regardless of whether you have received financial aid in the past. This policy is not applicable to scholarships or employee tuition benefits. Your SAP status does not determine your eligibility to register for classes.
Scholarship Award Funding
Policy
The Student Financial Assistance Scholarship Office is committed to awarding ASU departmental scholarships in a timely manner.
In accordance to FIN 203, spending should be managed so that accounts do not go into deficit status. Please note that scholarship awards will not disburse to students until corresponding funds have already been transferred to the appropriate scholarship account (see below for differences regarding sponsored accounts).
Student Loan Code of Conduct
ASU follows the Arizona Student Loan Code of Conduct between schools and lending institutions. You can read the Code of Conduct below.
Dependency Status
The Federal government has specific criteria on determining whether a student is considered dependent or independent for financial aid (see dependency defined by the Dept. of Ed.). If extenuating circumstances exist between you and your parents (i.e., abuse, abandonment), you can request a review of your dependency status by submitting a Dependency Review form.
E-mail Correspondence
Student Financial Assistance will use e-mail as its official means of communication with you. This will allow us to communicate to you expeditiously and allow you faster and more convenient access to your financial aid information.
We will always direct e-mail correspondence to your @asu.edu address. If you want to have e-mail redirected from your official @asu.edu address to another e-mail address (e.g., @hotmail.com, @aol.com, etc.) you must sign in and update your @asu.edu e-mail preferences.
Financial Aid Eligibility Criteria
Students must meet the following minimum criteria to be eligible for most federal, state and institutional funding:
Overawards
An "overaward" is when your need based awards exceed your financial need, or the total of your awards exceed your cost of attendance. If you have been overawarded, federal regulations require ASU to adjust your awards which may result in a bill. Need based aid include grants, scholarships, Federal Work-Study, Federal Perkins Loans, subsidized Federal Stafford Loans and outside resources (i.e. faculty/staff tuition benefits, scholarships, stipends, etc.). Non-need based aid includes unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans, PLUS Loans and Alternative Loans.
Return of Financial Aid
Official Complete Withdrawal
Circumstances may necessitate complete withdrawal from the university for a semester in which you are already registered. The outcome of a complete withdrawal on your financial aid depends on when the withdrawal is initiated and the type of financial aid you received. However, in all cases, your financial aid must be recalculated. Also, complete withdrawal may negatively affect your Satisfactory Academic Progress.
Census
Definition of Census
Census is the point in time that Student Financial Assistance evaluates your official enrollment status for financial aid purposes. The actual time that Census occurs is at 11:59PM [Arizona Time] on the 21st calendar day of each semester, see our Financial Aid Calendar for census dates.
