Elena's Story

"If you're thinking about going to college, don't procrastinate. It's a bad habit you should get rid of immediately if you want to be successful in school." Elena has experienced researching and going through the process of choosing a school, applying for admission and applying for financial aid. She knows that the earlier you start the better off you are. As a first generation college student, she did most of the legwork herself with the help of her high school counselor who provided resources on how to apply for financial aid including scholarships.

"My parents thought I should focus on going to a community college since it seemed more realistic financially, but after I saw friends going to ASU and other colleges, I really liked the idea of the university environment and what it had to offer. I had it narrowed down to two schools but ASU seemed really responsive to my questions - like they wanted me to be here. My parents were supportive of whatever my final decision was but also indicated that they would not be able to offer much assistance in paying for school. The financial aid package ASU awarded me helped cement my decision to attend. Luckily my scholarship, grants and other financial aid have helped cover my expenses and I haven't had to take out any loans."

Elena, now a sophomore, continues to be happy with her decision to attend ASU. She says, "The environment is really friendly and welcoming. Plus, everything you need is here or close by." After completing her bachelor’s degree in biology, Elena plans to pursue medical school.
