Satisfactory Academic Progress

To be eligible for federal and state aid programs, you must meet all three SAP standards regardless of whether you have received financial aid previously. The three SAP standards are:

  1. GPA Standard: Maintain minimum GPA standards. (Refer to the General Catalog for specific GPA requirements for your program of study.) Students on academic disqualification are not eligible for financial aid.
  2. Pass Rate Standard: Students must pass at least 67% of the total institutional credit hours attempted in their degree level at Arizona State University. Measurement of your pass rate will occur at the completion of each spring semester.
  3. Maximum Credit Hour Standard: Students who have attempted in excess of the credit hours indicated in the table below, are ineligible for financial aid. Measurement of your attempted credit hours will occur at the completion of every fall, spring and summer semester. Transfer credits are included in this measurement.

SAP Status Definitions

Status Definition
Financial Aid Probation Warning SAP status if your ASU pass rate is less than 67% upon your first measurement. You remain aid eligible (as long as you meet all other financial aid eligibility criteria). You will have until the end of the next spring semester to raise your cumulative institutional pass rate to the 67% standard.
Financial Aid Suspension SAP status if you do not meet the 67% ASU pass rate standard at your second measurement. Students with this SAP status are ineligible for financial aid. If the measurement occurs after a semester has begun, aid for that semester will be cancelled. You will also lose aid eligibility for subsequent semesters. This policy is not applicable to scholarships or employee tuition benefits.
Financial Aid Termination SAP status if you are measured at or in excess of your credit hour limit for your program. Students with this SAP status are ineligible for financial aid. If the measurement occurs after a semester has begun, aid for that semester will be cancelled. You will also lose aid eligibility for subsequent semesters. This policy is not applicable to scholarships or employee tuition benefits.

Regaining Eligibility Due to SAP Violation

StatusWhat To Do
Financial Aid Suspension You can do one of the following:
  1. Enroll at ASU without financial aid and pass sufficient credits to meet the required cumulative institutional pass rate standard. (You must submit written notification to the SFAO when this has been accomplished before aid eligibility will be reinstated.)
  2. Submit a Satisfactory Academic Progress Review form (with required documentation of circumstances) by the deadline noted on the form. If the SAP Review form is approved, your eligibility will be reinstated until the next SAP Pass Rate measurement.
Financial Aid Termination
Submit a Satisfactory Academic Progress Review form (with required documentation of circumstances) by the deadline noted on the form. If the SAP Review form is approved, your financial aid eligibility will be extended through the number of semesters it takes you to earn up to the number of additional credit hours approved. Review approval is only granted for extenuating circumstance beyond the control of the student.

Appeal Decisions

Submission of a Satisfactory Academic Review form is not a guarantee of an approval and/or reinstatement of financial aid eligibility. A committee will review appeals on a case-by-case basis. Review approval is only granted for extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the student. Inability to master course material is not an extenuating circumstance. All decisions made by this committee are final.
