Orientation Placement Exams

Placement exams help guide you to the correct level within a subject, helping you to be able to learn at a pace that is appropriate to your knowledge in that subject area. Unified Math Placement Test

All students, without exception, are required to complete the Unified Math Placement Test (UMPT). Your score on this exam will determine the math class in which you can register, except for MAT 251, MAT 265, MAT 270 or APM 265. To enroll in these classes, you must take the UMPT and achieve a score of 36 on the Calculus Placement Test.

Important Details:

  • You must take the UMPT online no less than three days before your ASU Orientation Program. Take test.
  • You will not be able to register for classes until you take the placement test.
  • Print your test results page and bring it with you to Orientation.
  • You may only take the placement test two times after May 2. ASU will use the higher score of your two tests for placement.
  • ASU offers a practice exam, and strongly encourages you to take the practice exam before taking the placement test.

Placement in Math Courses

ASU mathematics courses start at the level of college algebra. If you have UMPT scores below the level required for college algebra, you will enroll in Intermediate Algebra during your first semester as part of the Math Refresher Program. Intermediate algebra is taught on the ASU campuses by the Maricopa Community College District, allowing you to strengthen your math skills before enrolling in ASU math courses. Upon successful completion of Intermediate Algebra with a grade of C or better, you will be permitted to enroll in the appropriate ASU math course.

Your academic advisor will assist you at Orientation with registering for the appropriate courses based on your placement score and major.

You will take a three-semester sequence to fulfill ASU's First-Year Composition requirement. The courses in that sequence are WAC 101, ENG 101 and ENG 102.

Using Advanced Placement (AP) Credit, Transfer English Credit and IB

If you have AP credit or college credit for an English class you took at another college or university, ask your advisor about how that course will transfer to ASU. For Advanced Placement (AP) credit you must submit a request to the College Board to send your test scores to ASU. For transfer credit you must have each college you have attended send your official transcripts directly to ASU.

Using CLEP Credit for Placement

Students may qualify for ENG 105 by achieving appropriate scores on the CLEP English Composition with Essay exam, however students will not be awarded college credit for the CLEP English Composition with Essay exam.
