Loan Entrance Counseling

If you are a first-time ASU borrower of a federal student loan, you must complete a Loan Entrance Counseling. This quick and easy online counseling session will help to ensure that you understand the responsibility and obligation you are assuming when borrowing this type of student loan. Each online session will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Before the Student Financial Assistance office is able to disburse loan funds, it must have record that you have completed a Loan Entrance Counseling session for each type of loan you accepted. Please be aware that it can take up to one week for our office to receive notification that you completed your loan entrance counseling.

Loan Program How to Complete a Loan Entrance Counseling
Federal Direct Stafford Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized)
  1. Visit https://www.dl.ed.gov/borrower/EntrCounselingStart.do to begin your Federal Direct Stafford loan entrance counseling.
  2. After you have completed this counseling session, you will be asked which school(s) you want to send the results to. Select the following regardless of which ASU campus you attend. You can also add additional schools of your choice.

Federal Perkins Loans
  1. Vist http://www.ecsi.net/promu5 to begin your Federal Perkins loan entrance counseling. This site allows you to complete the Federal Perkins loan entrance interview and MPN at the same time.

Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loans

  1. There is no entrance counseling required for this type of loan.

Federal Direct PLUS Loans for Graduate and Professional Students

  1. If you have already completed an entrance counseling for a Federal Stafford Loan, you do not need to complete one for your Federal Direct PLUS Loan, otherwise continue with step #2.
  2. Visit https://www.dl.ed.gov/borrower/EntrCounselingStart.do to begin your Federal Direct Stafford loan entrance counseling.
  3. After you have completed this counseling session, you will be asked which school(s) you want to send the results to. Select the following regardless of which ASU campus you attend. You can also add additional schools of your choice.

Private Student Loans (alternative loans)

  1. There is no entrance counseling required for this type of loan.
