Predoctoral Internship Program

August, 2009

Dear Internship Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in our APA-accredited predoctoral internship training program! Counseling and Consultation (C&C) is the primary mental health care provider for the ASU – Tempe campus, one of the largest universities in the country. We provide initial assessment, focused individual and group therapy services, and limited psychiatric services to students, as well as consultation and outreach our diverse university community. In addition, we have a large training program, which includes predoctoral psychology interns, postdoctoral psychology residents, practicum counselors and psychiatric residents. Our clinical staff includes psychologists, social workers, counselors, and psychiatrists representing a number range of theoretical orientations. Therefore, the training environment is enhanced by the richness of a multidisciplinary approach.

As you may be aware, the state of Arizona’s university systems experienced a hiring freeze that affected ASU during this last year. The timing of the freeze necessitated that we place the C&C internship on inactive status for the 2009-2010 academic year. Despite this event, we have received good support from our university administration that the internship training program will resume for the 2010-2011 academic year.

The internship at Counseling and Consultation (C&C) is a 2000 hour, 12-month training program. Our program is designed to provide emerging professional psychologists an opportunity to solidify existing skills, learn new competencies, and integrate their identity as a psychologist. We provide strive to provide a program that balances both challenge and support while exposing interns to the variety of roles and experiences typical of university counseling center psychologists.

We know that the application process is extensive and can be complex. We would like to provide you with as much information as possible to assist in your decision making process.
